School of the Arts - Courses - TC1819 - Creative Writing (Teens)

During this 8-week, pressure-free, creativity-stretching, not-like-school courses, creative writing workshop course, writers from grades 9 through 12 will expand their talent, gain skills and explore the power of words to express who they really are. Each class will dive into new forms of writing, including poetry, journaling, character development, spoken word, oral storytelling, memoir, and more.

Exciting, award-winning experts will teach 4 of the 8 sessions, including a poet, 2 storytellers, 2 youth spoken word artists, and a designer who specializes in the use of the imagination or original ideas. Cael, the instructor, will be at these guest sessions, since she would not miss this chance at witnessing creative courage and gaining these joyful experiences.

The course will explore letting what’s inside of our selves out in a way that’s exhilarating, honest, encouraging and super-fun. The class will follow closely to Cael’s principle that, “There is no way to do this wrong; a feeling of creative playfulness and possibility will prevail.”

Participants will write loads, and through that writing will be invited to find their voices, share their stories and be their truest selves, both on and off the page. Lots of laughter, deep writing, and making room for all the feelings, will take place. There will be take-home assignments between sessions.

This course is ideal for teenagers who wish to express themselves freely, without rules or inhibitions, who want to connect with new friends with similar questions and desires. Teens who want to be with the love of words, not writing rules, who feel ready (though maybe a little scared) to write and share their writing will thrive in this course.

This course will not critique, foster competition, give strict rules or pressure participants to write things they don’t want to write.

This is a class for teens in Grades 9-12.
