Light & Solitude: Landscapes of Spirit and Place

Light & Solitude is an immersive exploration of the landscapes that shape us, externally and within. Through monumental watercolours and oil paintings, Barry McCarthy invites viewers to slow down, to stand still, and to listen to what the land is quietly telling us. These works move beyond traditional landscape painting to be come meditations on presence, memory, and the emotional weight carried by place.

From the mist-laden fields and rivers of Elora to the weathered Atlantic cliffs of Nova Scotia, McCarthy paints not only what is seen, but what is felt. Light becomes a living force – revealing stillness, tension, and moments of fragile beauty. Solitude emerges not as loneliness, but as a necessary space for reflection: a pause where the noise of daily life recedes and something deeper can surface.

The landscape in this exhibition feels familiar, yet altered-imbued with atmosphere, time, and quiet mysticism. Coastal houses cling to cliffs, fields breathe in early morning hush, and vast skies open spaces for contemplation. These scenes mirror the human experience: our need for grounding, our relationship to time and weather, and our longing for connection and retreat.
Presented in celebration of newly revitalized exhibition spaces at the Elora Centre for the Arts, Light & Solitude creates a sensory dialogue between art, architecture, and environment. The scale of the works confronts viewers with both grandeur and intimacy, encouraging an embodied experience – one that asks us to notice how we occupy space, and how space, in turn shapes us.
The exhibition is organized around the concept of place, guiding visitors through regions that have deeply informed McCarthy's creative practice. We begin with "Places Here": works rooted in the landscapes of Elora, capturing the unique character of the region – its rivers, fields, and shifting light. These paintings reflect an intimate relationship with the places we live, shaped by familiarity and observation.

Next, we experience "Places North". This section explores Ontario's northern landscapes, where rugged shorelines and open expanses offer a sense of retreat and stillness. The works evoke solitude as refuge-spaces where time seems to slow, and the land asserts its enduring presence.

Then comes "Places Ease", a series of paintings shaped by maritime light and working histories. These coastal landscapes carry the weight of weather, labour, and endurance. Here, light is dramatic and changeable, reinforcing the emotional pull of the sea and the resilience of those who live alongside it.
An important element of this installation is the inclusion of smaller studies, which offer a glimpse into the artist's process, preparation and thought before the larger works can even begin. Several 10" x 14" studies reveal McCarthy's careful practice of refining light, mood and emotion on a small scale before undertaking the demanding task of painting monumental works. Together, they underscore the patience and discipline behind the seemingly effortless atmosphere of the finished pieces.

At its core, this exhibition is a meditation on being on how light works passing time, how landscapes hold memory, and how places - whether cast or familiar-offer moments of clarity, comfort, and transformation. It marks not only a new chapter for the Gibson Centre but also an invitation to see our own surroundings – and ourselves – with renewed attention.

In standing before these landscapes, we are invited to consider our own places of light and solitude – the spaces that have shaped us, grounded us, and continue to hold our stories.
